Description

Hot Pursuit remains focused in racing using exotic sports cars, but features races that primarily take place in locations within North America, including varied settings and climates. In addition, police AI is significantly improved over its predecessor, utilizing several tactics to stop both the player and opponent. The game was released for PlayStation in March 1998 and later received an enhanced port for Microsoft Windows in September 1998. A PlayStation 2 version was developed, however it was cancelled. During the Electronic Arts Keynote on June 14, 2010 EA announced that a new Need for Speed game under the same name, scheduled for released on November 16, 2010. The game title’s suffix, “Hot Pursuit”, is a term for a police pursuit.

Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit

Overview & History

Released by Electronic Arts in 1998, *Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit* revolutionized the arcade racing genre by shifting the franchise's focus from exotic car tours to high-stakes, adrenaline-fueled evasion. Moving away from the purist simulator roots of its predecessors, this installment introduced the iconic "Hot Pursuit" mode, allowing players to either outrun relentless police interceptors or jump behind the badge to bust speeding street racers. Developed by EA Seattle, the game capitalized on 3D accelerator cards of the late 90s, delivering blistering frame rates, photorealistic skyboxes, and licensed dream cars like the Lamborghini Diablo SV and Ferrari 355 F1. Its distinct blend of arcade pick-up-and-play accessibility and tactical law enforcement gameplay cemented its legacy as a milestone in vehicular combat racing, spawning a legendary sub-series that defines the brand to this day.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around split-second reflexes and aggressive driving physics. Players can choose between single races, knock-out tournaments, and the titular Hot Pursuit mode across diverse, checkpoint-based tracks winding through sun-drenched coastal routes, dense alpine forests, and treacherous nocturnal canyons. The standout mechanic is the asymmetric dual-role system: as a racer, you must master manual drifting, slipstreaming, and utilizing shortcuts to survive spike strips and rolling roadblocks. As a cop, you command a formidable police cruiser equipped with a tactical radio to call in roadblocks and backup, aiming to ram suspect vehicles into submission. The game also features an extensive in-game showcase with narrated automotive histories, detailed statistics, and customizable vehicle paint jobs.
