Description

What happens when you take several signature Capcom fighters, squish them down into chibi (small or SD) versions of themselves, and give them a whole collection of wacky moves and over-the-top costumes? You get Pocket Fighter! Take on one of several pint-sized Capcom characters in this wacky, colorful fighting game.

Pocket Fighter

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1997 for the CPS-2 arcade hardware, Pocket Fighter (originally known in Japan as Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix) is a comedic, chibi-styled crossover fighting game. Taking iconic rosters from Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, and Red Earth—such as Ryu, Chun-Li, Morrigan, and Ken—Capcom transformed them into super-deformed caricatures. The game serves as a satirical, lighthearted celebration of the company's arcade fighting legacy, featuring vibrant, hand-drawn stages packed with cameos from classic Capcom franchises like Mega Man and Final Fight.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional fighters, Pocket Fighter distills complex movelists into accessible, highly energetic mechanics centered around colorful Gems. Players collect Red, Blue, and Yellow gems scattered across the arena or generated by executing specific attacks to dynamically level up their special moves on the fly. The combat system also introduces the hilarious 'Flash' mechanic—costumed transformations where characters morph into bizarre alternate outfits (like Ryu donning a schoolboy uniform or Chun-Li in a police costume) to deliver devastating comedic strikes. Super Combos are executed via a meter system, and rounds are fast-paced, chaotic, and heavily reliant on quick reflexes rather than intricate input memorization.
