Description

Battle Arena Toshinden 2 is the first sequel to Battle Arena Toshinden.

It adds three new starting fighters; Tracy and Chaos with the original game’s final boss, Gaia returning un-armoured and with a completely new move set. There are also three new bosses and hidden characters raising the total number of fighters to 15 (up from 10).

Toshinden 2, on top of additional special attacks for every character, adds several running attacks to each character: the ability to strike a grounded opponent with new ground attacks and the powerful Overdrive attacks that one must fill up a bar by using other attacks to be able to use.

Battle Arena Toshinden 2

Overview & History

Developed by Tamsoft and published by Capcom in late 1995 for arcade hardware before finding massive success on the Sega Saturn and PlayStation, *Battle Arena Toshinden 2* refined the pioneering 3D weapon-based fighting formula of its predecessor. The game's storyline plunges players deeper into the shadowy lore of the secret Secret Society, where fighters like Eiji Shinjo, Sofia, and newcomer Chaos seek the ultimate truth behind the tournament and the fate of Eiji's missing brother, Sho. Visually, the arcade port supercharged the polygonal engine with sharper textures, dynamic lighting, and breathtaking pre-rendered background stages that moved fluidly as the camera panned around the combatants. It stands as a fascinating bridge era for 3D fighters, maintaining arcade authenticity while expanding the mythos of its iconic cast.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, *Toshinden 2* introduces a more aggressive, combo-centric system powered by the inclusion of Overdrive attacks and refined weapon-clashing physics. Unlike traditional hand-to-hand fighters, every character wields a distinct arm—ranging from Eiji's standard katana and Sofia's flexible electric whip to Ellis's magical staff and Mondo's gigantic, skull-crushing battle axe. The addition of the "Retreat" maneuver and the refined guard system allow for tactical spacing and sudden counter-attacks. Character moves are executed using an intuitive four-button setup governing weak and strong strikes, kicks, and specialized weapon specials. Players can also trigger devastating Desperation Moves when their health dips into the critical red zone, adding high-stakes drama to every single round.
