Description

Wu-Tang Shaolin Style – aka Wu-Tang Taste the Pain in PAL regions – is a four-player, 3D fighting game for the PlayStation. The basis for the game’s story and setting is the real-life rap group the Wu-Tang Clan, featuring characters based on their stage personas and the martial arts themes of their music. Some members of the group also provided voiceover work for the game and made vocal and production contributions to the game’s music.

Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style uses the same engine created by its developer, Paradox Development, for their unreleased PlayStation title Thrill Kill. That game was noteworthy for allowing up to four players to fight simultaneously, a feature heavily utilized in Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style.

Battle an evil warlord named Mong Zhu as members of the rap group Wu-Tang Clan in this 3D fighting game featuring nine playable characters. Master the martial arts as RZA, Method Man, Raekwon, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Masta Killa, U-God, Inspectah Deck and Ghostface Killa. The Story Mode starts you off in a courtyard area called the Hub, which resembles a city intersection with four separate alleys. Each alley leads to a fight against specific enemies from the Mong Zhu clan.

Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style

Overview & History

Released in 1999 by Paradox Development and published by Electronic Arts, *Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style* is a gritty, cult-classic four-player fighting game steeped in martial arts lore and the iconic aesthetic of the hip-hop supergroup the Wu-Tang Clan. Initially developed as a spiritual successor to *Thrill Kill* (using that engine's infamous mutilated anatomy and engine architecture before EA shelved it), the game was retooled to feature the nine members of the Clan—RZA, Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, and GZA. The storyline plunges players into a dystopian, neon-lit New York City overrun by the corrupt warlord Mongthor and his minions, who have kidnapped the grandmaster. The Wu-Tang disciples must journey through the five chambers of Shaolin, mastering distinct fighting styles ranging from drunken fist to mantis and tiger techniques, ultimately seeking vengeance and mystical supremacy across blood-soaked arenas.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard 1D or 2D side-scrolling brawlers, *Shaolin Style* offers a frantic, free-roaming 3D arena fighting system that supports up to four players simultaneously in a brutal free-for-all or cooperative survival mode. The game mechanics emphasize environmental interaction, vicious combos, and meter management. Each Clan member possesses a signature weapon—from RZA's iron-shod staff to Method Man’s dual hook swords—along with unique martial arts disciplines that dictate their speed, reach, and special throws. Filling the "Chi" meter via successful strikes allows players to unleash devastating cinematic special moves and fatality-style "Wu-Executioner" finishing maneuvers that leave opponents literally torn to pieces. The arenas themselves are interactive hazards, featuring acid pits, crushing walls, and rogue enemies that disrupt the flow of combat, requiring constant spatial awareness and aggressive crowd-control tactics.
