Description

The Fifth Element is a third-person adventure wherein you take on the persona of one of two characters. Your two choices stem from the two main ones from the movie, Korben Dallas or Leeloo Minai Lekatariba-Lamina-Tchai Ekbat.

Korben, played by Bruce Willis in the film, is a cab driver. He lives in New York City when the game starts, and he is the one man capable of saving the world.

Leeloo is The Fifth Element. She is the only hope that the universe has against Pure Evil.

The story goes that every five thousand years a door is opened between dimensions. One dimension is our universe, and the other is the anti-universe. This universe is known as Pure Evil, and waits for the doors to open, since every five thousand years the four basic elements (earth, air, fire, water) are gathered around the fifth the perfect being (Leeloo).

The two characters have different options available to them. Korben can use guns, while Leeloo can use grenades. This helps you in certain aspects of the game, and choosing your character wisely can mean the difference between life and death.

The Fifth Element

Overview & History

Released in 1998 by Activision, The Fifth Element arcade adaptation plunges players directly into the dystopian, neon-soaked cyberpunk future of Luc Besson's iconic sci-fi blockbuster. Departing from the standard movie-tie-in formula, this gritty side-scrolling platformer bridges the narrative gap between Korben Dallas's mundane New York taxi driver existence and his high-stakes destiny to protect Leeloo, the Supreme Being. Across multi-tiered industrial levels, futuristic skyscrapers, and exotic alien landscapes, players relive the frantic quest to unite the four elemental stones against the encroaching evil of Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg and the Mangalores. While capturing the distinct aesthetic and quirky humor of the film, the arcade version is notoriously unforgiving, demanding absolute precision through labyrinthine stages filled with trigger-happy mercenaries, environmental hazards, and relentless enemy spawn rates.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay alternates between intense run-and-gun combat, spatial platforming, and strategic puzzle-solving, with players able to switch between the rugged ex-commando Korben Dallas and the hyper-agile Leeloo depending on the mission chapter. Korben relies heavily on a customizable arsenal of heavy ballistic weaponry—ranging from standard laser pistols to rapid-fire pulse rifles—while Leeloo utilizes devastating martial arts, incredible leaping ability, and acrobatic melee combos to bypass obstacles and incapacitate foes at close range. Environmental interaction is crucial; players must hack terminal consoles, manipulate gravity lifts, and manage a limited inventory of health packs and ammunition. Checkpoints are sparse, meaning every firefight requires calculating enemy attack patterns and utilizing cover before advancing into the game's notoriously brutal boss encounters.
