Description

E.T. may have left Earth safely onboard his spaceship, but trouble awaits him soon after landing in this 3D PlayStation adventure. The universe is in danger and only E.T. can help save it, by finding exotic plants. As the kind-hearted alien from the 1982 film, re-released in 2002 to commemorate its 20th anniversary, players must rescue rare plants from a total of five planets: Green Planet, Ice Planet, Desert Planet, Planet Metropolis, and Earth. Each planet contains a specific number of plants to find across three levels.

Worlds are also filled with hostile creatures or government agents, so E.T. needs to use his special powers to help him overcome all manner of threats. As E.T. walks and runs across the levels, he can call upon the power of telekinesis to move items closer, use his healing power to restore flowers, and unleash a heart stun to temporarily freeze enemies. Also available on each level are items such as keys or switches, which let E.T. access blocked areas. Progress in the adventure can be saved to a memory card.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial: Interplanetary Mission

Overview & History

Developed as a rare arcade adaptation diverging from the infamous Atari 2600 cartridge, *E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial: Interplanetary Mission* thrusts players into a vibrant, coin-operated sci-fi adventure released during the mid-1980s. Unlike its predecessor's frustrating pit-traversing puzzles, this arcade title reimagines Spielberg's beloved alien as an agile cosmic traveler navigating hostile galactic terrains, research laboratories, and hostile planetary outposts. The storyline follows E.T. on a desperate quest to collect scattered pieces of his broken interplanetary communicator while evading trigger-happy secret agents and malfunctioning security droids. Its detailed pixel art and upbeat synthesized soundtrack capture the cinematic wonder of the film while delivering a fast-paced, action-oriented coin-op experience that remains a fascinating relic of classic arcade history.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay blends side-scrolling platforming with item-collection mechanics across diverse alien worlds and terrestrial research facilities. Players must carefully manage E.T.’s glowing index finger energy meter, which acts as both a health bar and a ranged weapon source. E.T. can unleash telekinetic energy blasts to neutralize hostile scientists and obstacles, or hover briefly over perilous terrain using his natural levitation abilities. Along the way, players collect Reese's Pieces to restore energy and uncover hidden communicator components required to finish each stage. Boss encounters demand precise timing to dodge containment forcefields and counterattack during vulnerability windows.
