Description

The year is 2219 and the Secilia Federation has initiated a plan to destroy Earth. So far, the evil federation has been highly successful in destroying much of the planet’s defensive forces and resources. With world destruction at hand, the fate of mankind is looking for a savior.

Unbeknownst to the federation, the Star Federation, an Earth-based organization, has been developing two highly sophisticated aircraft known as the R-Gray prototypes. These destructive machines are packed with homing missiles, laser cannons and other crippling weapons. As the planet’s hero, you’ll control either R-Gray ship, taking to the skies in a desperate mission to stop the Secilia Federation from carrying out their plans.

RayStorm

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1996 for the ZN-1 arcade hardware and later ported to the PlayStation, RayStorm is a stellar vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up that serves as the prequel to RayCrisis and spiritual successor to Layer Section. Set in the 22nd century, the storyline depicts a desperate war between Earth and its rebellious, heavily militarized space colony, Secilia. Earth's forces deploy the R-Gray 1 and R-Gray 2 experimental fighters into enemy territory to execute a preemptive strike against Secilia's orbital superweapon, the Judgement Day system. Visually transitioning from 2D sprites to striking 3D polygonal graphics, the game is heavily defined by its breathtaking, cinematic presentation and an unforgettable, melancholic progressive techno soundtrack composed by Zuntata's Tamayoshi Ohmura.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

RayStorm revolves around an eight-directional ship movement system coupled with a revolutionary dual-firing mechanic. Players choose between the nimble R-Gray 1 (featuring concentrated straight lasers and wider lock-on targeting) and the heavier R-Gray 2 (featuring wide-spread main shots and concentrated lock-on missiles). The core gameplay loop introduces a target-cursor mechanic: holding down the secondary fire button projects a reticle across the 3D plane. Players can sweep this reticle over multiple ground and air enemies, and upon releasing the button, unleash a barrage of homing lasers that curve across the screen. Destroying locked-on enemies simultaneously yields higher score multipliers and chain bonuses, which is essential for survival during frantic boss encounters where managing screen space between relentless bullet hell patterns and targeted enemy artillery is paramount.
