Description

Officially licensed by Razor USA, a company that makes scooters and safety equipment, Razor Freestyle Scooter has you controlling one of ten characters though a series of three environments while trying to perform various stunts and aerial maneuvers (a total of 45 moves are available in the game).

Built using the Grind Session skateboarding engine, Razor tells the story of a group of kids whose friends have been captured by an evil giant robot. Over the course of the game, the youngsters will have to complete an assortment of challenges to rescue their pals. Once the necessary tricks and objectives have been completed, a special level opens up where players will have an opportunity to rescue one of the captured friends.

Razor Freestyle Scooter

Overview & History

Released by Crave Entertainment in 2001 during the height of the aluminum folding scooter craze, Razor Freestyle Scooter successfully translated the extreme sports genre pioneered by Tony Hawk into the world of kick-scooters. Originally developed for PlayStation and Game Boy Color before finding a vibrant life on web-based arcade portals, the game captures a uniquely nostalgic turn-of-the-millennium pop-culture aesthetic. Players choose from a roster of real-life pro riders and fictional characters, dropping into obstacle-laden urban skateparks, suburban neighborhoods, and industrial zones. While it lacked a deep narrative campaign, the game offered a pure arcade-style experience driven by high scores, secret unlockable decks, and gritty industrial soundscapes that defined early 2000s extreme sports media.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay relies on momentum management and combo chains within a strict time limit. Unlike skateboarding titles, the scooter's low deck clearance and small wheels alter the verticality and speed of runs. Players can grind rails, manual across flat surfaces, and launch out of half-pipes to execute signature aerial maneuvers. Character moves range from basic tailwhips and barspins to gravity-defying no-handed airs and complex footplants. Success depends on maintaining your "Special Meter" by varying trick types and avoiding ugly bails, which instantly wipe out accumulated points. Hidden items scattered across every level—such as missing scooter parts and collectible tokens—encourage thorough exploration of the vertically layered sandbox environments.
