Description

Just as Street Racer for the Super NES is similar to Super Mario Kart, Street Racer for the PlayStation is similar to Mario Kart 64. Filled with twists and turns, this go-cart racing game allows you or you and a friend to choose from eight different cars, each with its own distinctive character behind the wheel. Up to eight people may play if you have two Multi-Tap controllers.

Each character has his or her own unique weapons. For example, Surf Sister uses Expanding Beach Balls to push other cars out of her way, and her Magnetic Attraction lures cars close so she can use her patented Beach Towel Flick. Another character, Frank Instein, has a Screaming Banshee to scare other players, a batmobile to charge into other players, and a Big Monster Mash punch. Speaking of punch, while the object of this game in each of the 24 tracks is to beat the other seven racers to the finish line, a good part of your time will be spent engaging in combat.

Street Racer

Overview & History

Originally tearing up European and North American arcades in 1994, Street Racer was developed by Vivid Image and published by Domark. Standing out in a saturated era of post-Super Mario Kart clones, this frantic, cartoon-styled racing game injected a heavy dose of side-by-side brawling and chaotic multiplayer energy into the arcade scene. Departing from traditional licensed motor vehicles, the arcade cabinet offered a vibrant four-player setup, allowing friends to trade paint and punches simultaneously. Its distinct blend of high-speed kart racing and aggressive combat mechanics carved out a cult legacy before being ported to various home consoles of the 16-bit and 32-bit generations.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike pure time-trial racers, Street Racer focuses heavily on vehicular combat, rough-and-tumble physics, and survival. Players choose from a colorful roster of eccentric characters—such as Frank, a leather-clad greaser; Raphael, a sumo wrestler; and Surf, an easy-going surfer—each piloting a wildly different customized vehicle. While navigating bizarre tracks spanning global landmarks, players collect power-ups to unleash devastating projectile attacks, speed boosts, and environmental hazards. The core mechanics revolve around aggressive driving: drifting charges up a special turbo meter, while physical bumps and sideswipes can send rival racers spinning off cliffs or into walls. Beyond the standard Grand Prix mode, the arcade experience shines in its unique battle modes. "Soccer" turns the racing arena into a vehicular football match, while "Rumble" challenges drivers to knock each other off a shrinking floating platform in a brutal last-kart-standing deathmatch.
