It’s time to wander off the beaten path with Test Drive Off-Road, the first off-road racing game in the popular driving series. Players can hit the road with one of four licensed 4×4 vehicles, each rated in speed, handling and acceleration: a Hummer, Land Rover Defender 90, Jeep Wrangler and Chevrolet K-1500 Z71.

Once you select a vehicle, you’ll be able to choose from four color schemes, enter your name and compete in a Mixed League or Class League. Depending on the league, you’ll race against other vehicles of the same class or challenge all classes for one of six different cups. Nine camera angles let you change perspectives on-the-fly, including a dashboard view complete with a moving steering wheel!

There are twelve 3D tracks in total, covering such terrain as dirt, snow, sand and rocks: County Road, Jump Jet, Sand Speedway, Ridge Runner, Devil’s Elbow, Winter Wonderland, Dirt Dash, Pharaoh’s Curse, Sand Trap, Under Construction, Snowball Express and Pipeline Way. A Practice mode will let you learn the ins-and-outs of these courses once you open them up within competition.

Released by Accolade in 1997, *Test Drive: Off-Road* shifted the iconic racing franchise away from sleek European supercars and onto the mud-soaked, treacherous terrain of rugged wilderness tracks. Breaking away from traditional asphalt circuits, this arcade racer capitalized on the late-90s craze for utility vehicles by licensing real-world heavy-hitters. Players could slide behind the wheel of authentic gas-guzzling beasts like the Ford F-150, Jeep Wrangler, Hummer H1, and even the legendary Range Rover. Though it lacked a sweeping narrative storyline, the game relied purely on the raw adrenaline of off-road supremacy, challenging drivers to conquer treacherous weather conditions, hidden shortcuts, and brutal elevation changes across global environments ranging from Yosemite National Park to the deep African desert. Its distinct aggressive arcade physics and heavy vehicle sway defined an era of unapologetic, dirt-churning fun.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike precision simulators, *Test Drive: Off-Road* embraces a chaotic, arcade-style physics model where drifting, power-sliding, and destructive collisions are not just encouraged—they are required to survive. Tracks are littered with environmental hazards, including deep mud pits that drastically reduce top speed, slippery ice patches, and rocky outcrops capable of launching your truck into a destructive barrel roll. The game features multiple modes, including a single-race option, a full tournament circuit, and a fiercely competitive split-screen multiplayer mode. A signature mechanic of the arcade version is the nitro boost system, which rewards daring airtime and clean driving with explosive bursts of speed. Players must master weight distribution; heavy vehicles like the Hummer demand wide, calculated turns, while lighter buggies require quick, twitch-reflex corrections to prevent flipping over steep ledges.
