Description

Test Drive Off-Road 2 follows the path set by 1997’s Test Drive: Off-Road as you drive across twelve courses (based on six locales: Morocco, Hawaii, Mojave, Santa Cruz, Switzerland and Wales) in your quest to win races on the World Tour. This time twenty vehicles are available to choose from, but before you can get behind the wheel, you’ll have to purchase them with credits earned from winning races.

Some of the licensed vehicles include a Hummer, Dodge Ram, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Explorer, Jeep Cherokee, Range Rover, Ford F-150 and a Dodge T-Rex. The World Tour consists of five events divided by class: Hummer, Safari, SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle), Truck and Military. Each class has you competing against five similar vehicles in a series of races, where you’ll need to place within the top three in order to advance to the next track.

Test Drive: Off-Road 2

Overview & History

Released in 1998 by Accolade, Test Drive: Off-Road 2 (also known as *4x4 World Trophy* in Europe) roared onto the PlayStation and Microsoft Windows as a gritty, arcade-style successor to the original mud-slinging racer. Moving away from purely licensed street trucks, this iteration embraced the untamed wilderness, trading asphalt for treacherous global tracks ranging from the scorching deserts of Utah to the muddy, snow-packed valleys of Yosemite, Moscow, and Mount Fuji. It abandoned strict simulation in favor of high-speed, arcade drifting and rubber-band physics, emphasizing chaotic collisions over pristine handling.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard circuit racers, *Test Drive: Off-Road 2* leans heavily into vehicular brute force. Players choose from a heavily detailed roster of officially licensed rugged beasts—including heavy-duty Ford F-150s, Dodge Rams, Jeep Wranglers, and Humvees—each boasting distinct acceleration, top speed, and traction ratings. The gameplay loop centers on aggressive checkpoint racing across treacherous, multi-pathed terrain filled with rocky outcrops, roaring rivers, and sudden elevation drops. A defining mechanic is the interactive environment; players can smash through fences, scatter livestock, and power-slide through deep mud pits that drastically alter handling. Nitro boosts allow for explosive bursts of speed on straightaways, though managing momentum through hairpin turns requires mastering the handbrake turn. While there is no traditional story mode, the championship ladder unlocks increasingly hostile environments and hidden super-trucks as you claim podium finishes against aggressive AI opponents.
