Description

Fans of classic aircraft take to the skies in Aces of the Air for the PlayStation. Pilot the vintage fliers in realistic 3D combat missions featuring old-school dogfighting techniques and ground combat. Each successfully completed mission earns players a new plane, all created with their own strengths and weaknesses. Those a bit nervous about the first flight will be happy to know a training mode teaches new fliers the basics of vintage aircraft control.

Aces of the Air features realistic, 3-D flight simulation, with a focus on dogfighting techniques using vintage aircraft. Missions include aerial combat, strafing ground troops and materiel, and taking out heavily fortified enemy positions.

Aces of the Air

Overview & History

Released during the golden era of retro arcade cabinets, *Aces of the Air* carved out a dedicated niche for itself by blending high-octane dogfighting with eccentric dieselpunk aesthetics. The storyline drops players into the cockpit of the Crimson Albatross squadron, an elite band of rogue aviators fighting against the mechanized tyranny of the Iron Empire and their colossal airborne fortress, the Leviathan. While initially developed for coin-op hardware in the late 1980s, the game gained legendary status for its vibrant pixel art, punishing difficulty curve, and unforgettable boss encounters against rogue steampunk aces.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional vertical scrollers, *Aces of the Air* utilizes a dynamic 2.5D perspective that allows players to execute sudden Immelmann turns and barrel rolls to evade incoming flak and missile lockdowns. The game features an innovative 'Heat Gauge' mechanic; continuously holding down the primary fire button causes your rotary cannons to jam, forcing tactical bursts of fire. Players can collect three distinct weapon power-ups: the spread-shot Tesla Coils, the armor-piercing Flak Cannons, and the homing Bumblebee Rockets. Character moves include a signature 'Afterburner Dash' that grants temporary invincibility frames, allowing you to slice through enemy formations and unleash point-blank aerial maneuvers.

Keyboard Controls
