Description

In Namco’s Air Combat, it is up to you to eliminate the enemy terrorist forces that threaten global prosperity. Intelligence has hinted that their main assault will be by sky and aircraft. You will engage in tactical dogfights and use any means necessary to shoot them out of the air and stop their devious plans.

As you progress throughout the various missions, you are awarded cash that allows you to buy newer and better aircraft. There are a multitude of planes included, such as the Mig and the elusive Stealth Bomber. Naturally, you will have to start out with smaller, less powerful aircraft and slowly build your way up as you complete missions and earn more money.

Each mission is different in objective, location, and strategy. Depending on what the mission requires of you, you must pick the aircraft most suited for the mission. Some missions require you to escort an important ambassador to safety, while others have you taking out a city’s power supply, putting an end to illegal oil smuggling by destroying a refinery, and even taking out a bridge.

Released into arcades during the golden era of 1990s aerial combat titles, Air Combat carved out a niche with its high-octane dogfights and frantic pacing. Developed to test the limits of fast-action sprite scaling, the game drops players into the cockpit of an experimental vanguard fighter. The storyline unfolds across a fictional, war-torn archipelago where a rogue military faction, the Iron Syndicate, has seized control of orbital defense cannons. As Earth's last surviving ace pilot, your mission is to slice through enemy armadas, rescue captured reconnaissance pilots, and neutralize the Syndicate's orbital superweapon before global communications collapse permanently.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike slower, tactical flight simulators, Air Combat is pure arcade adrenaline from takeoff to touchdown. Players navigate a relentlessly scrolling vertical and horizontal airspace, battling waves of agile interceptors, heavy bombers, and heavily armored ground turrets. Power-ups scattered across the playfield upgrade your standard vulcan cannons into piercing plasma lasers, surface-to-air missiles, or defensive energy shields. The game features distinct pilot maneuvers: double-tapping directional inputs executes an evasive barrel roll to dodge incoming red-hot tracer fire, while charging your special meter unleashes a screen-clearing kinetic shockwave. Boss encounters demand precision timing, forcing you to exploit blind spots in massive dreadnought hulls.
