Metro City, 2026. A corrupt mutant group by the name of “Scumocide” plot to control the universe. The hero, Captain Commando assembles a team of three renegades; Ginzu the Ninja, Baby Head, and Mack the Knife; to help him foil Scumocide’s plans. This task will not be easy as many of Earh’s institutions are infested with Scumocides minions, but strength and persistence runs the team into the crusade.

The player chooses one of these four characters, who must fight their way through an army of genetically engineered super-criminal, traveling through a series of locations such as the bank, museum, circus, aquarium, and several others, right through to a planet called “Callisto”, where the evil behind “Scumocide” awaits. All four characters have their own special attacks. Captain Commando can use the power of his suit to shoot electricity through his palms. Baby Head rides around in a mech suit which does more damage. Mack can use short knives. Each location ends with the character defeating a boss before proceeding to the next one.

Captain Commando

Released by Capcom in 1991 for the robust CPS-1 arcade system, Captain Commando is a landmark futuristic beat-'em-up set in the chaotic, neon-drenched streets of Metro City in the year 2026. Players lead a strike force headed by the titular superhero, who originally evolved from a fictional spokesperson in early Capcom NES manuals. Alongside his loyal Commando Companions—Mack the Knife (an alien mummy), Ginzu the Ninja, and Baby Head (a genius infant piloting a brute mech)—the Captain must stop a genetically engineered army of super-criminals led by the warlord Scumocide. Later ported to the SNES and PlayStation, the original coin-op edition remains celebrated for its gorgeous sprite art and frantic multiplayer action.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game features cooperative play for up to four players, expanding on traditional brawling mechanics by introducing interactive elements and unique character arsenals. Players can smash crates to find health-restoring items or pickup weapon drops like machine guns, rocket launchers, and giant mallets. A defining feature is the ability to hijack rideable combat mechs left behind by enemies, utilizing their punching and freezing abilities to turn the tide of battle. Each hero boasts a distinct moveset: Ginzu can slice enemies in half with his katana, Mack melts targets with acid knives, Baby Head uses heavy wrestling throws, and Captain Commando unleashes fiery blasts. Double-tapping the joystick triggers a dash, allowing for specialized running strikes. When overwhelmed, pressing Attack and Jump simultaneously executes a screen-clearing desperation move, such as the Captain's electric "Captain Corridor" ground slam, which sacrifices a small portion of health to ward off surrounding foes.
