Shao Kahn has assumed control of Earth and the Outworld, and now both are plunged into darkness, overrun by his barbaric beasts. You must clash with evil to restore order and put Shao Kahn in his place. Are you ready to sacrifice your soul in battle? Go toe-to-toe with 15 ruthless pugilists, including new fighters like Nightwolf, the four-armed Sheeva, riot cop Stryker, and Shao Kahn’s evil bride Sindel. Of course, you’ll also find your old favorites like Jax, Sonya, and Liu Kang. All of the moves from the arcade version are here as well, and you can also take on a friend and find out who is the king of kombat.

Overview & History

Released by Midway in 1995, Mortal Kombat 3 violently shattered the arcade status quo by dragging the mystical martial arts tournament out of ancient temples and into gritty, modern urban environments. Dispelling the supernatural tone of its predecessors, series creators Ed Boon and John Tobias crafted a narrative where Shao Kahn successfully resurrects Sindel on Earthrealm, merging it with the Netherrealm and initiating a brutal invasion. To survive, Earth's chosen warriors must rely on newly integrated mechanics, a faster game engine, and desperation. The game discarded several fan-favorite ninjas like Scorpion and Reptile, replacing them with cybernetic assassins and street-level brawlers, which initially shocked players but ultimately forced a tactical reinvention.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

MK3 introduced the revolutionary "Run" button, changing the aggressive meta by allowing players to sprint directly at opponents and close distance instantly. This speed was compounded by the addition of the "Dial-a-Combo" system, which codified multi-hit strings into memory, demanding precise cadence over frantic button-mashing. Defensive options expanded significantly with the inclusion of "Kombos Mutators" and the automated "Master" combo breakers, letting skilled defenders shatter incoming onslaughts. Brutalities made their gory debut, offering an exhaustive 11-hit execution alongside the return of traditional fatalities, animalities, and stage finishers. Visually, digitized sprites captured real actors performing frantic motion-captured choreography, while the iconic "Ultimate" update soon followed to appease demands for classic characters.
