Description

When the magic-infused “Comet of Infinite Possibilities” is about to pass over Lyr for the first time in 300 years, Sorceress Nikki decides that stealing the source of its magic is a quicker way to reach power than study. But the evil Goon Queen Zorrscha has her sights set on the comet as well. Nikki and Fargus, a pyromaniac court jester with his own special abilities, race the queen for the goal.

Pandemonium 2

Overview & History

Released by Crystal Dynamics in 1997 as the direct sequel to their pioneering 2.5D platformer, Pandemonium 2 pushes the limits of PlayStation-era polygon rendering while making a rare, lesser-known footprint in arcade history through specialized coin-op adaptations. Following the reality-sharpening disaster of the first game, protagonists Folly the jester and Nikki the wizard stumble upon a mysterious distress signal emanating from the desolate frozen moon of Lyr. Their quest leads them into a race against the villainous Goon Cortés to harness the legendary Comet of Longing. Departing from the original's standard level selection, Pandemonium 2 introduces a dynamic narrative progression filled with surreal mechanical environments, towering robotic bosses, and vibrant, texture-mapped backdrops that bend and curve around the player's perspective.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

While retaining the signature 2.5D gameplay where characters traverse a 3D-modeled path that twists through three-dimensional space, this sequel heavily refines the movement system. Folly and Nikki now boast distinct physical attributes: Nikki possesses a double-jump ability that grants superior aerial control, while Folly utilizes a powerful pole-vault maneuver to clear massive chasms. Combat relies heavily on a revamped offensive arsenal, allowing players to freeze enemies with ice projectiles, scorch foes with fire breath, or unleash a devastating ground-pound shockwave. The game introduces fast-paced, white-knuckle vehicle segments—such as runaway minecarts and slippery luge tracks—that demand split-second reflexes, elevating the platforming challenge far beyond conventional running and jumping.
