Description

The Mappets have shielded the land of Gross from war and destruction for close to 1,000 years. But the evil General Vorless has stolen the Soul Sword and is using it to destroy the Mappets. With the Mappets out of the way, he hopes to awaken Luna, the Goddess of Destruction, and rule the land unopposed.

Luca and his sister Elena are two orphans, living in a small house in the kingdom of Gross. They have two good friends – Mouse and Nicol. One day, while exploring a local cave, the four youths find a mysterious jewel. Later, they travel to the city of Goondocks, where they find a similar jewel – along with a note left to them by Luke’s and Elena’s parents. They learn that their parents belonged to an ancient race named “Eternal Eyes” – people who could control inanimate dolls called Mappets. Now the four heroes have to learn the power of controlling Mappets, and to stop a villain from resurrecting the Goddess of Destruction.

The heart and soul of the game is battle, with all of the battles taking place on 3D isometric fields inhabited by 2D sprites. Every character has unique skills that must be employed during the fight to succeed. Luckily, there are also 150 Mappets that can be collected to help give you an edge in combat. Play ETERNAL EYES and help Luca save the world and the Mappets.

Eternal Eyes

Overview & History

Developed by Sunsoft and released for the Sony PlayStation in 1999 (with a subsequent arcade-leaning distribution profile through emulation platforms), Eternal Eyes is a distinctive tactical role-playing game that blends grid-based strategy with monster collection and puppet-crafting lore. Set in a fantasy realm where humanity and magical puppets known as "Puppets" coexist, the storyline follows a young boy named Reim, who holds the rare ability to create and animate these sentient constructs. As a dark cult threatens the world by seeking to harness ancient, destructive magic, Reim must forge contracts with various elemental creatures, evolve his mechanical guardians, and traverse treacherous isometric battlefields. While initially received as a niche title due to its stiff competition in the late-90s tactical RPG boom, it has since achieved cult status among retro enthusiasts for its quirky synthesis of Pokémon-style creature progression and traditional strategy-RPG combat.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard arcade beat-'em-ups, Eternal Eyes operates on a turn-based, tactical grid system where positioning dictates victory. Players command Reim and a roster of customizable Puppets, engaging enemies across diverse terrain types that alter movement ranges and elemental affinities. A standout mechanic is the puppet evolution system: by collecting "Anima" fragments dropped by defeated foes, Reim can fuse core items with monsters to spawn entirely new combatants with specialized skill trees. Combat moves range from standard melee sword strikes and elemental projectile spells (Fire, Water, Earth, Wind) to area-of-effect support magic that buffs ally defense or manipulates turn orders. Strategic placement of Puppets triggers devastating flanking bonuses and combo attacks, requiring players to carefully manage their party's inventory, magic points (MP), and durability.
