In Darkstone, you are the chosen one to counter Draak’s plan to plunge the world into a new Age of Darkness. Character choices are made from four classes (wizard/sorceress, assassin/thief, warrior/amazon or monk/priestess). The overall objective is to track down the seven crystals of the Time Orb, created a millennium ago from the tears of the benevolent goddess Kaliba and restore it. Only then will you have the power of the mighty Orb at your disposal to use as the ultimate weapon against Draak.

By the numbers, Darkstone contains four distinct regions of Uma, more than 100 evil creatures based on 30 types of characters, 32 specific spells and nearly two dozen skills (six major). Additional features include full 360-degree movement, more than 30 weapons (some multi-purposed), numerous items and traps and over 200 enemies and characters with which to interact.

Developed as a gritty, action-oriented spin-off of Delphine Software's beloved European PC role-playing franchise, Darkstone: Evil Reigns translated the dark, isometric fantasy universe into a fast-paced, arcade-style beat-'em-up experience. Originally conceived to capture the burgeoning coin-op market of the late 1990s and early 2000s, this rare arcade cabinet distilled the sprawling lore of the original PC game—wherein heroes must unite to stop the resurrection of the ancient dragon Lord Draak—into intense, linear combat stages. Players select from iconic fantasy archetypes like the stalwart Warrior, the agile Monk, the deadly Thief, or the mystic Mage, each possessing unique weapon ranges and elemental properties. As you hack and slash your way through cursed crypts, goblin-infested forests, and demonic citadels, the game emphasizes cooperative real-time brawling, item management, and quick reflexes over deep stat-crunching, offering a remarkably visceral and arcade-tuned descent into gothic high fantasy.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Darkstone: Evil Reigns pivots away from mouse-driven point-and-click mechanics to deliver punchy, arcade-cabinet action. Combat revolves around fluid directional movement, combo strings, and screen-clearing special attacks that drain a portion of your health or magic meter. Characters wield distinct loadouts: the Warrior unleashes sweeping halberd arcs with massive crowd-control potential, while the Monk unleashes lightning-fast martial arts flurries and the Mage summons elemental projectile storms from a safe distance. Defeated foes frequently drop health potions, mana crystals, and temporary stat buffs, keeping the momentum frantic. Environmental hazards, destructible objects, and sudden ambushes demand sharp positioning, making cooperative play essential for survival as enemy hordes scale in ferocity across multi-tiered boss encounters.
