Description

The Dark Anarchy Society is taking over the world, destroying Earth’s biggest cities in the process. As captain of an attack sub, you must seek and destroy the D.A.S.’s underwater headquarters which lie somewhere in the frigid depths of the Antarctic Circle. Your ship is equipped with machine guns and torpedoes. These weapons can be upgraded to surface-to-air missiles, smart missiles, floating mine launchers, hyper torpedoes, and supersonic torpedoes.

While you cruise beneath the surface of the ocean, helicopters, walkers, submarines, and other vehicles of destruction release a torrent of bombs, torpedoes, and missiles, constantly assailing your ship from all sides. You’ve also got to watch out for ice beams that freeze all vessels within range.

This side-scrolling shooter is composed of seven levels: The South Pole, The Channel, Seabed Ruins, Sunken Town, Deep Dark Sea, and the Enemy Base. A friend can join in for two-player simultaneous action.

Developed by Irem and released in Japanese arcades in 1993 before making its way to Western cabinets in 1994, *In the Hunt* (*Kaitei Daisensou*) is a visually striking sub-aquatic side-scrolling shoot-'em-up. Helmed by key creators who would later form Metal Slug developer Nazca Corporation, the game is legendary for its densely detailed, hand-drawn sprite work and pre-rendered 3D backgrounds. Set in a post-apocalyptic near-future where a catastrophic melting of the polar ice caps has submerged the world's major coastal cities, players command the cutting-edge Granvia attack submarine. The rogue military syndicate known as the D.A.S. forces attempts to conquer the flooded globe, and your experimental submersible is humanity's only remaining line of defense.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Spanning six grueling, vertically and horizontally scrolling stages, *In the Hunt* distinguishes itself from typical shmup formulas by forcing players to navigate tight underwater caverns, engage surface fleets, and blast subterranean enemy bases simultaneously. Players utilize two distinct weapon fire buttons: one to unleash a forward-firing torpedo alongside an anti-air missile launcher, and another to drop depth charges or fire upward-arcing mortar shells. Power-ups scattered throughout the aquatic ruins allow players to upgrade their arsenal into massive spread-shot torpedoes, cluster bombs, and hyper-lasers. Cooperation is key in the two-player simultaneous mode, where coordinated strikes against screen-filling mechanical bosses like massive battleships and colossal drill tanks are essential for survival.
