Description

Enter a world where humans and creatures called Timenoids coexist. These blue-skinned Timenoids are determined to wipe out the inferior human race, and this is where you come in. You play the role of Millennia, a young woman who was brainwashed at an early age to do the Timenoids’ bidding. She now believes that the humans must be exterminated from the world, which is rather ironic, since she is human herself. Yet if she succeeds, the Timenoids have promised her immortality and the power to become one of their own…

In this sequel to Tecmo’s Deception, you are once again placed inside a castle to lure invaders into various traps. The game differs from the original in several ways, however. The view is no longer first-person, so you can see your character at all times. Multiple traps can also be triggered at once (up to three), forming even deadlier combinations than the original. In addition, the vibration mode is supported on the Dual Shock Analog Controller to provide feedback on each gruesome death. Prepare for a non-linear journey as the decisions you make during the game affect the type of ending you’ll receive. Maybe, just maybe, you’ll remember your past…

Kagero: Deception II

Overview & History

Developed and published by Tecmo, Kagero: Deception II (released in Japan as Deception II: Gyakusatsu Satsujin) hit the original PlayStation in 1998 as a dark, psychological evolution of the trap-based dungeon crawler genre. Diverting from traditional sword-and-shield action RPGs, this unique title places players in the tragic shoes of Millenia, a young girl forcibly marked by the Devil and manipulated into assassinating innocent travelers to harvest their souls. Unlike its predecessor Tecmo's Deception, this sequel refines the narrative tension and hones the claustrophobic trap-laying mechanics, cementing Tecmo’s legacy for crafting gleefully sadistic cult classics that subvert conventional hero tropes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves entirely around tactical premeditation rather than brute force. Millenia is physically weak and cannot directly defeat the armed knights, mercenaries, and villagers who intrude upon her gothic domain. Instead, players must strategically explore multi-level rooms in real-time, pre-mapping lethal architectural devices such as ceiling crushers, swinging pendulum blades, electric floors, and springboards. Once intruders enter a room, players trigger these mechanical hazards in calculated sequences, executing brutal combo chains to maximize damage and soul yield. Between missions, players can upgrade their fortress with deadlier contraptions, navigate branching storylines, and decide the ultimate fate of various trespassers, leading to multiple distinct endings based on moral choices.
