Description

Deception III: Dark Delusion is the third installment in Tecmo, Inc.’s unique role-playing series. Players enter a world where strategy and innovation are integral to survival, and where deceit and mysterious intentions abound. Deception III combines RPG elements with action and adventure, as deadly traps are constructed and placed to destroy enemies. The game utilizes a third person perspective, and features over 2000 trap combinations. Multiple endings are possible as the player makes decisions that will affect Reina’s future. In addition to the story mode, there are Trap License, Training, and Expert options available.

What was meant to be a joyous occasion has turned into a living nightmare. Reina was in the midst of celebrating her 17th birthday, having just received a beautiful brooch from her stepmother, when two men burst into their home. Reina, her little brother, and her stepmother were kidnapped and taken to the island of Alendar, a war-torn land teeming with criminal activity. Bandits from Alendar have been raiding Reina’s home of Burganfada for slave labor, and now Reina finds herself in front of the corrupt King Fredrick. What happens next will change Reina’s life forever. Reina must use all of the resources at her disposal to stay alive, collecting souls and creating an arsenal of traps which will allow her to discover the true meaning of her power.

Deception III: Dark Delusion

Overview & History

Released by Tecmo in 1999 for the PlayStation, *Deception III: Dark Delusion* represents the dark pinnacle of the trap-based strategy-action genre. The narrative follows Reina, a young girl framed for murder and exiled to the dreaded Burgen State, a land cursed by the Evil God. Sold into slavery and facing execution, Reina is saved by the sinister spirit Rafael, who bestows upon her the Deception trap power. Players guide Reina through a labyrinth of gothic castles, dungeons, and royal manors as she uses wicked architectural hazards to exact bloody vengeance against her pursuers and unravel the dark conspiracy that destroyed her life. The game distinguished itself from traditional beat-'em-ups by forcing the player to act as a chessmaster of slaughter rather than a mere warrior, blending psychological horror with intricate puzzle-box combat design.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard action titles, *Deception III* forbids direct physical attacks for the most part; instead, Reina relies entirely on timing, positioning, and pre-placed room mechanisms. Players explore fully 3D-rendered chambers in a fixed-camera perspective, luring human enemies—such as relentless knights, assassins, and royal guards—into deadly combinatorial sequences. The core gameplay revolves around activating three distinct types of traps: Ceiling variants (like dropping boulders and falling guillotines), Wall variants (such as spiked arrows, fireballs, and pendulum blades), and Floor variants (including bear traps, springboards, and electric grids). Success demands chaining these hazards together to rack up high combo scores, earning "Cadre" (experience currency) to purchase deadlier traps, health upgrades, and rare items. The game features multiple endings dictated by moral choices and targets eliminated, adding significant replay value to its macabre campaign.
