Description

The British Touring Car Championship represented the worldwide peak of saloon car racing in the mid 1990s, attracting factory support from Audi, Renault, Ford, Volvo and several other constructors. In this game you can choose from all official teams and drivers of the 1997 season, won by Renault’s Alain Menu.

All the circuits are also included. The cars have a realistic damage model, so they can loose specific parts like bumpers or mirrors. The weather effects are also very realistic. Car handling is designed to be tough but realistic.

TOCA Championship Racing

Released in late 1997 by Codemasters, TOCA Championship Racing (known in Europe as TOCA Touring Car Championship) brought the high-octane drama of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) to motorsport enthusiasts. Representing a landmark release in the racing genre, the game captures the full 1997 BTCC season. It bypassed fictionalized arcade settings in favor of authentic licensed tracks like Brands Hatch, Donington Park, and Silverstone, alongside real-world manufacturer teams including Williams Renault, Volvo, and Audi Sport.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, the game delivers a brilliant hybrid of realistic simulation and accessible arcade racing. Players pilot iconic 2.0-liter touring cars, such as the Honda Accord and Peugeot 406, each modeled with distinct front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive handling characteristics. The AI opponents are notoriously aggressive, fighting for the racing line and executing daring overtakes. A pioneering feature for its era is the real-time damage physics; high-speed collisions result in shattered windshields, crumpled hoods, and detached bumpers, which directly impair your car's aerodynamics and suspension alignment. Players must also contend with dynamic weather conditions, where sudden British rainstorms drastically reduce track grip, requiring careful throttle modulation to prevent spinouts.
