Description

Gubble is a cute, colorful alien and he needs your help to get back to his home in this PlayStation game. It seems that creatures of Gubble’s kind are particularly adept at loosening screws, nails, rivets, and other such fasteners. So adept, in fact, that Gubble has been kidnapped and sent to a dangerous planet to ply this skill. His captors have instructed him to unfasten the screws and bolts on a large enemy ship, promising to return him to his home if he is successful.

Success will take good puzzle-solving skills though (and perhaps a little luck), as the falling pieces from the unfastened ship could put a quick end to Gubble’s efforts. Not to mention the enemy creatures, who would rather their high-tech equipment remain in one piece.

Gubble

Overview & History

Developed by Actual Entertainment and originally released in 1997 for PC before transitioning into quirky arcade iterations, Gubble is a bizarre, isometric puzzle-action game that stood out in an era dominated by traditional platformers. The storyline casts players as Gubble, a stubborn, green, screw-nosed alien who becomes infuriated when a race of bureaucratic interstellar kids kidnaps him from his home planet and forces him to play on bizarre, floating toy-themed planets. Equipped with only a trusty hammer and a relentless attitude, Gubble must smash his way through an eccentric gauntlet of hostile robotic toys, winding tracks, and diabolical mazes to find the exit hatch on every level and escape captivity.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where jumping is paramount, Gubble relies heavily on momentum, top-down-style navigation, and continuous movement. Gubble is always on the move, forcing players to master sudden turns and precise cornering as they traverse floating platforms suspended in deep space. Character moves revolve primarily around swinging a heavy carpenter's hammer to smash persistent enemies—such as wind-up soldiers, bouncing balls, and toy trains—or utilizing various specialized pick-ups like roller skates for speed boosts, ray guns, and pogo sticks. Each stage is a race against a ticking clock where players must collect specific items, avoid environmental hazards, and strategically dismantle enemy spawn points to unlock the level exit, blending fast-paced arcade action with intricate spatial puzzle-solving.
