Description

In this 3D scroller, Johnny Bazookatone and his band are the hottest group in the universe, spreading peace and happiness with their music. El Diablo, the Lord of the Underworld, sees this and being incapable of creating his own music, steals Johnny’s guitar Anita and has his demons kidnap great musical legends from around the planet.

Johnny manages to avoid the goon squads and follows them back to the underworld. There, armed with a bazooka-guitar, he is ready to wreak havoc on the bad guys in an attempt to rescue his true love, Anita.

This cartoon-style game is set in the year 2050 A.D. and features various special effects and scenery commensurate with the hellish Underworld setting. Movement includes 360-degree spin jumps, hover jumps and other standard 3D scrolling action.

Johnny Bazookatone

Overview & History

Developed by Arc Developments and published by US Gold in 1996, Johnny Bazookatone is a visually striking, side-scrolling platformer dripping with a cool, neon-lit 1950s rockabilly aesthetic. Set in the afterlife metropolis of Underworld City, players step into the shoes of Johnny, a slick-haired guitar hero framed for a crime he didn’t commit by the nefarious mobster El Diablo. To make matters worse, El Diablo has stolen Johnny’s prized, custom pink-and-gold archtop guitar, the "Bazookatone." Johnny must blast his way through treacherous underworld levels—ranging from subterranean jazz clubs to neon-soaked neon alleys—to retrieve his instrument, rescue his kidnapped manager, Anita, and bust out of purgatory. Originally released in arcades before seeing ports to home consoles, the game stands out for its unique blend of traditional run-and-gun action and heavy metal flair.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where guns or swords rule the day, Johnny’s weapon of choice is pure sonic devastation. Without his Bazookatone, Johnny starts at a disadvantage, but once he reclaims his magical guitar, the gameplay transforms. The guitar functions as a literal blaster, allowing Johnny to fire explosive musical notes at grotesque enemies like cigar-smoking skeletons, robotic bouncers, and ghost gangsters. The game features fast-paced, multi-directional shooting mechanics across vibrant 2.5D pre-rendered environments. Players must master precise jumping, ducking, and continuous firing while dodging chaotic hazards and environmental traps. Special guitar riff attacks can clear the screen of lesser foes, while platforming sections demand rhythm and timing to navigate moving platforms, bottomless pits, and vertical ascension zones. Boss battles against mob bosses and musical fiends require pattern recognition and aggressive sustained firepower, all set to an energetic, twangy rock soundtrack that reinforces the game’s rebellious underworld vibe.
