Description

The first motocross game on PlayStation, VMX Racing features eight 125cc and 250cc bikes competing in four single-player circuits: Enduro, National, Supercross, and Full. After selecting a bike, each individually rated in acceleration, braking, throttle, and speed, you’ll compete on one of six courses against seven computer-controlled riders.

Earn points by performing an assortment of stunts or by achieving a first-place finish. VMX Racing also includes head-to-head racing against a friend on either a horizontal or vertical split-screen display.

VMX Racing

Overview & History

Developed by Point of View and published by Electro Brain in 1997, VMX Racing blasted onto the arcade and console scene as a high-octane, no-holds-barred motocross experience. Abandoning the polite simulations of its contemporaries, the game leaned heavily into the late-90s extreme sports craze, trading gravity-defying realism for aggressive, contact-heavy arcade action. Players select from a roster of edgy, leather-clad riders and tear across perilous, mud-caked tracks set everywhere from industrial junkyards to rugged mountain canyons. While it didn't spawn a massive franchise, it remains a cult-classic relic of an era when arcade racers prioritized instant adrenaline over technical precision.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

VMX Racing sets itself apart through its unabashedly dirty combat mechanics. Alongside standard throttle and brake controls, players can actively punch, kick, and ram competing racers to knock them off their bikes, turning every race into a chaotic demolition derby on two wheels. The physics engine is delightfully loose, encouraging massive, soaring jumps where riders can execute mid-air trick combos to fill up their turbo-boost meters. Tracks are littered with alternate paths, hairpin turns, and destructive environmental hazards that demand quick reflexes. Coupled with a thumping, high-energy rock soundtrack and announcer voiceovers that reward brutality, the game delivers an intensely aggressive racing loop.
