Description

A new King of Fighters tournament was announced, though the letters of invitation sent out to the fighters were no longer sent by Rugal Bernstein. The letters also announced many changes, the first of which being a massive overhaul of the tournament’s approach. During the time that had passed between the tournaments since the previous year, the King of Fighters tournament’s fame had grown immensely, to the point that it turned into a major international event, which had not happened before. Huge corporations transformed the King of Fighters tournament into something widely televised, commercialized, and celebrated, drawing in many crowds from around the world. The tournament is now held by Chizuru Kagura: a descendant of the ancient Yata Clan responsible for sealing the Orochi demon along with the Kusanagi and Yasanaki clan (the clans from Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami, respectively). Chizuru uses the tournament in hopes of finding and recruiting Kyo and Iori in order to stop the upcoming Orochi threat, but Kyo and Iori aren’t exactly willing to work together on friendly terms.

The King of Fighters '96

Released by SNK in 1996 for the Neo Geo MVS arcade platform, The King of Fighters '96 represents a pivotal turning point in the legendary 3v3 fighting series. Moving away from the mysterious Rugal Bernstein, the storyline introduces Chizuru Kagura, a descendant of the sacred Yata clan, who sponsors the tournament to recruit powerful fighters to seal the impending threat of the ancient deity Orochi. This entry marks the dramatic debut of key characters like Leona Heidern and Vice, while cementing the bitter rivalry between Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami under the shadow of the wind-controlling final boss, Goenitz.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

KOF '96 revolutionized the franchise by fundamentally altering its movement and combat dynamics. The slow sidestep mechanic from prior titles was replaced with a tactical forward emergency evasion roll, and players could now run forward instead of merely hopping. SNK also introduced various jump heights—including small hops and super jumps—which drastically increased the game's offensive pace. Character arsenals were heavily redesigned to emphasize close-quarters brawling; projectile attacks were shortened, forcing players into melee range. For example, Kyo Kusanagi lost his traditional ground fireball in favor of the devastating, close-range 114 Shiki: Aragami chain punches. Desperation Moves return, executable when the player's health bar flashes red or when their POW gauge is fully charged.
