Description

Speed Racer is an English adaptation name of the Japanese manga and anime, Mach Go Go Go which centered on automobile racing. Mach GoGoGo was originally serialized in print form in Shueisha’s 1958 Shonen Book, and was released in tankobon book form by Sun Wide Comics, re-released in Japan by Fusosha. .

Based on the popular cartoon, Speed Racer joins the plethora of racing games available for the PlayStation. As Speed Racer himself, you can race on three different tracks simply titled S, M and L for small, medium and large. Before beginning a race you must choose between three slight variations of Speed Racer’s famous white Mach 5, one of which has manual transmission. Each of the three cars is equipped with special features such as grip tires, rotary saws, a periscope, a deflector and auto jacks. Other options include 18 different soundtracks, normal and endurance racing modes and the ability to increase the speed and efficiency of your opponents.

Released in arcades by Data East in 1995, Speed Racer translates the high-octane aesthetic of the iconic Tatsunoko Productions anime into a frantic vehicular combat game. Eschewing a standard racing sim format, this title thrusts players into vehicular survival combat inspired by the classic series' treacherous grand prix tracks. Utilizing customized sprite-scaling hardware, the arcade cabinet captures the dizzying speed and vibrant Saturday-morning cartoon palette of Speed Racer's universe. Players select from a roster of iconic characters, each piloting their signature lethal machine, as they fight for survival against ruthless rival drivers across global circuits while unraveling minor narrative rivalries lifted straight from the television show.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional racers where crossing the finish line first is the sole objective, Speed Racer emphasizes brutal vehicular combat, survival, and resource management. Players must maintain their Mach 5's structural integrity while deploying a devastating arsenal of signature gadgets. The gameplay loop requires balancing high-speed drifting around sharp hairpin turns with executing offensive maneuvers against aggressive AI opponents like Rex Racer, Snake Oiler, and the villainous Craterites. Points and health are earned by eliminating rival vehicles, collecting iconic 'M' icons, and successfully navigating perilous terrain hazards such as oil slicks, collapsing bridges, and sudden avalanches. Success hinges on mastering the weapon cooldowns and weapon-switching mechanics on the fly.
