Frenzy!

Overview & History: Released by Stern Electronics in 1982, Frenzy! is the intense, highly technical sequel to the legendary multi-directional arcade shooter Berzerk. Players control a green humanoid protagonist trapped in a labyrinth of electrified chambers, pursued by an unrelenting army of killer robots. While the original game set the standard for early vocal synthesis and claustrophobic gameplay, Frenzy! elevated the formula by introducing strategic depth, complex level layouts, and highly erratic enemy AI. The core objective remains pure survival: navigate the deadly grid, eliminate the synthetic guards, and escape before the smiling terror, Evil Otto, hunts you down.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its predecessor, Frenzy! introduces interactive physics and destructible elements to the maze walls. Walls are now constructed from two distinct materials: solid, reflective metal that bounces laser fire (posing a lethal threat to both the player and the enemies), and breakable dotted blocks that players can slowly blast away to forge new escape routes. The robotic enemies come in two varieties—delicate skeleton droids and sturdy tank-bots—both capable of firing back at 45-degree angles. Most notably, the infamous grinning boss "Evil Otto" returns. In this sequel, Otto is no longer completely invincible; players can temporarily destroy him with multiple well-placed shots. However, defeating Otto causes him to respawn in an even faster, bouncing rage, drastically increasing the stage difficulty and forcing quick reflexes.
