Description

Prepare your mind, body and soul for a horrific game of hide and seek, where you are the hunted! From the people at Psygnosis comes this bone-chilling, mind-numbing strategy title that will make you dive into your brain and cringe with fear. The game is Sentinel Returns for the PlayStation.

You are a scientist, exploring the mysteries of an unknown substance. When this mysterious substance is given to an equally unknown specimen, a world dominated by The Sentinel is revealed. In this unreal universe, the battle for life’s very essence is in motion. Possibly, when you finish with the hundreds of specimens that you have, you will seek the answers to your questions. However, failing this task has unknown repercussions….

Sentinel Returns

Released in 1998 by Psygnosis and developed by Hookstone, Sentinel Returns is the atmospheric, psychological sequel to Geoff Crammond’s groundbreaking 1986 classic, The Sentinel. Bringing the surreal 3D puzzle-strategy gameplay into the late 90s, this release is famed for its gothic, organic art style and a deeply unsettling, ambient soundtrack composed by legendary horror director John Carpenter. The game transports players into a tense, abstract cyber-world consisting of 650 unique, checkered multi-tiered landscapes, tasking them with climbing to the highest peak to defeat a watchful, god-like entity.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

In Sentinel Returns, you control the Synoid, a stationary entity that cannot walk or jump. Instead, movement is achieved through teleportation and resource management. The objective is to scale the terraced landscape, reach a higher elevation than the omniscient Sentinel standing at the peak, and absorb it. You begin each level with a set amount of energy, which is used as currency to create blocks, trees, and new "shells" (empty bodies). By placing a shell on a higher tile within your line of sight, you can teleport your consciousness into it, then rotate to absorb your previous vessel to reclaim your energy. Stealth is critical: if the rotating gaze of the Sentinel or its Sentries sweeps over you, they will lock on, trace your energy signature, and slowly dissolve you. Players must strategically position trees to block the enemies' sightlines, carefully managing limited energy while searching for a path upward.
