Rosco McQueen Firefighter Extreme features 15 levels of third-person platforming action. Played from an over-the-shoulder perspective, players will guide Rosco through burning rooms filled with innocent hostages, power-ups, and secret items. It is advised that players move with extreme caution as there’s a host of hazards including backdrafts, flame-overs, dangerous smoke, and electrical fires. There are 12 hazards in all, each taking hose precision and brainpower to overcome.

In addition to the various hazards, Rosco will use his trusty axe to dismantle his enemies and break down locked doors. While the fearless firefighter is rescuing hostages and hosing down the flames, he’ll need to be on the lookout for any bombs. Those pesky A-Bots are bomb crazy; they’re placing the destructive devices all over the place. Players are also required to keep an eye on the temperature. If a room gets too hot, the sirens will sound and the game will end.

Released in late 1997 by Psygnosis and developed by Slippery Grip, Rosco McQueen: Firefighter Extreme is a frantic, arcade-style 3D action-platformer that perfectly captures the "extreme" gaming aesthetic of the late 90s. The game's storyline pits the titular, mustache-sporting hero against the villainous corporate magnate Sylvester T. Square. Obsessed with total real estate dominance, Square deploys a mechanical horde of pyromaniac robots, known as Auto-Dampeners, to burn down rival skyscrapers. As Rosco, players must breach these blazing towering infernos, neutralize the mechanical threat, and rescue civilian hostages trapped in the suffocating smoke.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay delivers a tense race against time, balancing hazard navigation with robotic combat. Rosco is equipped with a versatile firefighting axe for melee attacks and a high-pressure water pack. Managing your water capacity is critical; players must locate active hydrants to refill their tanks while keeping a close eye on the rising ambient temperature meter. If a room gets too hot, Rosco takes continuous damage. Combat involves executing quick axe-slashes to dismantle Sylvester's security droids, while platforming requires precise jumps over crumbling floorboards, dodging sudden backdrafts, and clearing pockets of toxic gas. Success relies on finding and evacuating trapped civilians scattered throughout the burning, multi-level towers before their oxygen bars deplete, making every second count.
