Description

In this one-on-one fighting game based on the famous plastic robot fighters, players not only get to pit various Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots up against one another, they also get to customize their bots’ various parts to make them even more steel-twisting and destructive than before.

Players initially have 12 different robots to choose from before they head off to the arena. With names such as Slamurai, Sir Haxalot, and General Warfare, it’s easy to see that Mattel Interactive is going for a bit of a tongue-and-cheek feel. While the names aren’t overly serious, the fighting is less comedic, with the robots throwing all of their various armaments at their opponents in order to assure destruction. These weapons are varied, from swords to bombs to Gatling guns. Each robot starts with a different set of weapons, and depending on the mode you’re playing, their attacks can be altered and switched around.

Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots Arena

Released in 2000 by Mattel Interactive and Tremor Entertainment, Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots Arena reimagined the classic 1964 tabletop boxing toy as a futuristic, 3D combat sports game. Transitioning from the simple yellow plastic ring to sprawling galactic coliseums, the game introduces a sci-fi gladiatorial lore where sentient mechanoids battle for supremacy in televised, corporate-sponsored tournaments. Players can pilot legendary champions like the Red Rocker and Blue Bomber, or choose from a diverse roster of specialized alien and robotic combatants, each seeking to claim the ultimate championship belt.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay elevates basic boxing into a tactical, limb-destroying fighting system. Combatants face off in hazard-filled 3D arenas, utilizing a mix of quick jabs, heavy hooks, and character-specific special moves like the Red Rocker’s overhead hammer fist or Blue Bomber's devastating charge attack. A dynamic damage system allows players to systematically target and sever an opponent's limbs, rendering them unable to punch or balance properly. Defeating an opponent culminates in the iconic "Pop-Top" knockout, which triggers a dramatic cinematic of the loser’s spring-loaded head popping up. Between matches, players can utilize earned tournament credits to completely customize their robot's parts, upgrading hydraulic chassis, pneumatic limbs, and shield generators.
