Description

In Re-Volt, choose from 25 R/C cars as you race your way through 13 tracks, including such locales as a neighborhood, a toy shop and a large ship called the Toytanic. Not all cars tracks are available at first, though, as the others must be unlocked by racing well in Championship Mode. Further, the tracks are also available in mirrored (everything is opposite), reversed (the track begins where it used to end) and reverse-mirrored (opposite and backward) fashions once you’ve proved worthy of experiencing such variations. And if those 52 paths aren’t enough for you, create new ones with the Track Editor.

Re-Volt

Overview & History: Released in 1999 by Acclaim Studios London and later adapted for coin-op amusement parks by Tsunami Visual Technologies, Re-Volt (Arcade) is a legendary radio-controlled (RC) racing game. Stripping away the serious tone of traditional simulators, the game operates on a whimsical premise: toy cars have gained a consciousness of their own, escaping the shelves of local toy shops to race through human-scale environments. The arcade version stood out by leveraging motion-simulation deluxe cabinets (TsuMo), allowing players to feel every bump, jump, and collision as they piloted miniature racers through everyday worlds.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Re-Volt's enduring appeal lies in its sophisticated, lightweight physics engine. Players choose from a diverse roster of RC vehicles—ranging from sleek electric cars to heavy-duty gas-guzzling buggies—classified by their drivetrain (RWD, FWD, 4WD). The cars bounce dynamically over curbs, slip on marble museum floors, and catch massive air off ramps. Racing takes place across highly creative, oversized hazard zones including a suburban neighborhood, a supermarket, and a botanical garden. Scattered along the tracks are lightning bolt pickups that yield chaotic weapons: firework rockets that lock onto targets, oil slicks to disrupt traction, water balloons, and the dreaded self-destruct bomb, which players must quickly pass to rivals by ramming into them before the timer expires.
