Description

X-COM: Terror from the Deep is the follow-up to the resource management and tactical combat game X-COM: Enemy Unknown.

It has been 40 years since X-COM last defeated the aliens. Now, in the year of 2040, aliens begin to appear on the Earth again. This time the threat to humanity is coming from the depths of oceans.

The game is almost identical to the original X-COM game. The user interface, weapons, and aliens are all the same. The only difference is the adaptation of the aliens and weapons (e.g. new hand-to-hand weapons) to the ocean environment. The game features both undersea and on-land missions, and is significantly harder than its predecessor.

X-COM: Terror from the Deep

Overview & History

Released in 1995 by MicroProse as the notoriously difficult sequel to UFO: Enemy Unknown, X-COM: Terror from the Deep shifts the sci-fi war from space to the crushing depths of Earth’s oceans. Originally debuting on PC DOS and later ported to the Sony PlayStation, the game gained legendary status for its deep atmospheric tension and Lovecraftian horror themes. Set in the year 2040, a dormant alien threat awakens in the sunken city of T'leth, targeting human shipping lanes. As the commander of X-COM, players must build deep-sea bases, fund marine research, and lead squad-based tactical missions in underwater trenches and coastal cities.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay is split between the strategic Geoscape and the turn-based tactical Battlescape. On the Geoscape, you manage global base construction, purchase interceptor submarines like the Barracuda, and research captured aquatic technology. In tactical battles, every move, shot, or inventory swap consumes Time Units (TUs). Aquanauts must utilize specialized underwater gear like Hydro-Jet Cannons, Sonic Pulsers, and heavy torpedoes to survive. Combat is highly lethal, requiring players to manage line-of-sight, kneel to increase firing accuracy, and preserve TUs for defensive reaction fire against brutal alien species like the armored Lobstermen and the terrifying, mind-controlling Tentaclatles.
