Dynasty Warriors

Released in 1997 by Koei, the original arcade version of Dynasty Warriors (originally titled Sangokumuso in Japan) is a historical milestone in gaming history. Long before the franchise pioneered the crowd-combat, hack-and-slash genre, it began as a weapons-based, one-on-one 3D fighting game. Set during the chaotic twilight of China's Han Dynasty, the storyline adapts the classic literary epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Players control legendary historical figures as they duel for military supremacy and personal honor, fighting to unify a fractured empire under a single banner.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay of this arcade classic shares more DNA with weapon fighters like Soul Edge than its own modern sequels. Combat is highly tactical, emphasizing weapon-clashing, precise spacing, and parrying. Players can execute horizontal slashes, heavy overhead vertical strikes, and quick kicks. A cornerstone mechanic is the Deflect system: timing a block just as an opponent strikes staggers them, leaving them open to a brutal counter-offensive. Additionally, as players deal and receive damage, their gauge fills, allowing them to unleash a devastating Musou attack—an unstoppable, character-specific super move. The roster features distinct combat styles, from Zhao Yun's rapid spear thrusts and fluid acrobatics to Xiahou Dun's heavy scimitar swings and Lu Bu's unmatched reach with his iconic crescent halberd.
