Tank Racer is the racing game with a difference. Developed by the Glass Ghost team at Simis, Tank Racer offers the player ’50 tonnes of Fun’ as they blast their way around a multitude of tracks.

Viewed from a 1st and 3rd person perspective, the ultimate aim is to win the Championship in the fastest time – if this involves blasting everything in sight, so be it! The player has to choose from a set of twelve tanks, find numerous power ups and allocate powerful weapons.

There are four distinct modes of play. The one-player options are Championship mode in which 3 Championship levels must be completed – totalling 15 tracks and Single race mode — a race against time. Multiplayer options include Battle mode and multiplayer race mode. The single and multi player levels are played out over numerous tracks and arenas.

The Playstation version has a multiplayer option (split screen).

Overview & History: Released in 1998 by Jester Interactive, Tank Racer injected heavy-metal chaos into the late-90s arcade racing scene. Breaking away from traditional motorsports, this cult classic pits oversized, combat-ready armored vehicles against each other in high-speed, destructive tournaments. Players compete in the prestigious "World Tank Racing Championship" across multiple cups, where a total disregard for civilian property is actively encouraged. Featuring a quirky, cartoonish aesthetic, the game gained fame for its vibrant, semi-destructible 3D environments and frantic multiplayer action across PC, PlayStation, and arcade setups.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard kart racers, Tank Racer blends high-speed drifting with explosive ballistic warfare. Players select from 15 distinct tanks categorized into light, medium, and heavy classes—ranging from the agile, pink "Teeny" to the devastating, skull-emblazoned "Maus." Each tank features unique stats in speed, armor, traction, and fire rate. The core mechanic revolves around utilizing the tank's rotatable turret to fire at rivals while navigating hazardous, obstacle-filled tracks like "Rothenburg" and "Tranquility Base." Racers can plow through houses, fences, and trees to discover hidden shortcuts or collect combat power-ups, including homing missiles, plasma shields, proximity mines, and speed-boosting turbo charges. Masterful players must utilize the independent turret-aiming system to shoot backward, disabling aggressive pursuers without losing forward momentum across Cup, Arcade, and Time Trial modes.
