Description

Military Madness is a turn-based strategy game that takes place on the moon in 2089, with the player controlling the Allied-Union forces against the Axis-Xenon forces. Units cannot be produced, but the Allied-Union forces could “capture” enemy units if they were in factories, or find unsecured factories and gain units from them. Units could also be repaired by returning them to factories under Allied-Union control.

The first game in the Nectaris series, Military Madness (Nectaris in Japan) was released originally for the TurboGrafx-16 console and was remade for PlayStation in 1998.

Overview & History: Released by Hudson Soft in 1989 for the PC Engine and adapted for various classic gaming formats, Nectaris: Military Madness revolutionized the turn-based tactical genre. Set in the lunar trenches of the year 2089, the narrative depicts a desperate conflict between the Allied Union and the tyrannical Guirest Empire. After the Empire stages a sudden coup and enslaves the Moon's colony, players assume command of the remaining Allied resistance forces, navigating 16 brutal sci-fi battlefields to reclaim the lunar surface and liberate imprisoned soldiers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional strategy games of its era, Nectaris relies entirely on deterministic tactics rather than random chance. Battles take place on a hexagonal grid where terrain elevation, defensive cover, and unit positioning dictate success. Key mechanics include the Surround Effect, which dramatically lowers an enemy's defense when attacked from opposite sides, and the Support Effect, which grants combat bonuses when friendly units occupy adjacent hexes. Players command a diverse arsenal of military hardware: swift recon buggies like the Rabbit, heavily armored battle tanks like the Giant, and long-range artillery units like the Atlas. Infantry units (such as Charlie and Kilroy) are fragile but crucial, as they are the only units capable of capturing neutral factories to secure fresh war machines and repair damaged forces.
