Description

Punky Skunk is not your ordinary skunk: he’s an extreme-sports loving critter trying to save his friends from a kidnapping wolf named Badler. So begins this adventure of a hip skunk and his 30 levels of platforming action, taking him through the sky, across land, underneath the ground and over water. Multiple paths and bonus levels will offer some variety in this throwback to 2D platform games of the past.

In order to succeed, Punky must use various moves to fight enemies, avoid traps and find the flagpole signifying the end of the level. In addition, you’ll be able to collect stars and 1-ups for extra lives, green orbs to replenish health, and gear icons outfitting Punky with one of six pieces of equipment: Paraglider, Inline Skates, Skysurfer, Pogo Stick, Jetpack or Diggers. Besides using the gear, Punky can either jump or attack enemies with his “spray.” Skunk got you stumped? Not to worry, you can resume progress at the start of each cleared stage if you have a memory card.

Overview & History: Originally conceptualized for the Super Nintendo as Cooly Skunk, this colorful game was ultimately salvaged, upgraded, and released for the Sony PlayStation by Jaleco in 1998. This quirky 2D side-scrolling platformer perfectly captures the rebellious "extreme attitude" mascot era of the late 1990s. The storyline follows Punky, an energetic skunk who loves extreme sports. When the environmentally destructive Badler Corporation, spearheaded by the villainous dragon BB Badler, threatens to pollute Punky's beautiful island home, the furry protagonist joins forces with his friends Nash and Kelly to dismantle the industrial empire through high-speed platforming heroism.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay of Punky Skunk blends standard platforming with unique, gear-driven traversal mechanics. Punky's default moveset includes standard jumping, a tail whip, and a specialized chemical spray attack that utilizes his natural skunk attributes to stun enemies. Throughout the game's diverse zones—ranging from frozen peaks to tropical jungles—players discover specialized sports gear that completely alters Punky's physics and momentum. You can strap on a snowboard to race down icy slopes, ride a pogo stick to reach high-altitude secrets, utilize inline skates for speed, dig through soft soil using mechanical claws, or glide over dangerous hazards with a parachute. Collecting stars scattered across the levels grants extra lives, while intense boss encounters demand precise mastery of Punky's shifting athletic gear to exploit enemy weaknesses.
