Umihara Kawase Shun

Overview & History

Originally developed by Studio2nd and published by Taito in 1997 for Japanese arcades, Umihara Kawase Shun is the cult-classic sequel to the pioneering 1994 Super Famicom physics-platformer. It follows the surreal misadventures of 20-year-old backpacker Umihara Kawase as she navigates bizarre, fish-infested dreamscapes populated by anthropomorphic marine life like giant coelacanths and bell-shaped squids. Unlike standard platformers of the era, Shun abandoned traditional combat, focusing instead on pure, momentum-based traversal across non-linear branching stages accessed via multiple exit doors, culminating in a deeply challenging speedrunning staple of the 90s arcade scene.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Shun's core mechanic revolves around an elastic fishing rod rather than a weapon. Players must cast the lure onto ceilings, walls, or floors to anchor themselves, then utilize real-world physics—such as pendulum swinging, rope-shortening, and bungee bouncing—to vault Umihara across bottomless abysses. Characters available in the arcade edition include the titular backpack-wearing heroine and Emiko, each featuring subtle physics variations. The game introduces a crucial "map screen" routing system where clearing specific exits changes the destination world, creating dozens of alternate routes. Pockets can be utilized to capture certain small enemies, while time trial mechanics reward precise mastery of tension, release, and aerial momentum conservation over mindless survival.
