Description

Chaos Break is essentially a third-person shooting game, with echoes of survival horror such as Resident Evil. Set in an abandoned biochemical laboratory on an isolated island, the two player characters, Mitsuki and Rick, are part of an investigatory and cleansing force sent to find out the cause of an ‘anomalous thermal reaction’. This game is a spin-off, set in the same universe as the arcade game Chaos Heat.

Progress through the game is made by defeating enemies, which in this case are alien lifeforms and the laboratory’s own automated defence system. An element of survival horror is introduced through the use of computer terminals, where the player can save and read files explaining the backstory of the game.

Chaos Break

Released by Taito in 2000 for the G-NET arcade system, Chaos Break is a gripping survival horror-action hybrid that serves as the direct sequel to the 1998 arcade hit Chaos Heat. Unlike many home-console horror games of the era, this title was specifically optimized for the coin-op environment, prioritizing fast-paced sci-fi action over slow-burn puzzles. The storyline unfolds within the claustrophobic, metallic corridors of the Flux Research Center, an isolated marine biochemistry laboratory. When a sudden power outage and containment breach occur, tactical agents Mitsuki and Rick are sent in to retrieve data. They quickly discover a horrific scene: a parasitic, alien-like lifeform has contaminated the facility, mutating the staff and turning the automated security systems hostile.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Blending the tense atmosphere of Resident Evil with aggressive arcade shooting, the gameplay forces players to navigate dark, interconnected sectors while managing limited resources. Players choose between Mitsuki, a swift biochemist utilizing elemental sub-weapons, and Rick, a heavy combat specialist wielding high-caliber firearms. Mechanics focus on dynamic combat, requiring players to hack terminals, bypass security locks, and defeat wave after wave of mutated monstrosities, including giant mutated crustaceans and bio-engineered biological weapons. Defeated enemies drop specialized items, and players must monitor their health meters using thermal scanners. Key character maneuvers include lateral strafing, a rapid 180-degree quick-turn to avoid flank attacks, and defensive physical escapes when ensnared by parasites. The arcade version stands out with its fluid real-time 3D rendering, intense pacing, and emphasis on high-score chasing.
