Tekken 3

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1997 on the revolutionary Namco System 12 hardware, Tekken 3 stands as a monumental pillar in the fighting game genre, later finding legendary status on the PlayStation. Set 19 years after the previous tournament, the storyline revolves around the awakening of Ogre, the God of Fighting, who preys upon legendary martial artists. This dark narrative paves the way for a generational shift, introducing iconic newcomers like Jin Kazama—seeking vengeance after his mother Jun falls victim to Ogre—alongside Ling Xiaoyu and Eddy Gordo, while bidding farewell to older character iterations.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its predecessors, Tekken 3 completely revolutionized 3D movement by introducing full-fledged sidestepping via the newly implemented axis system, allowing fighters to seamlessly duck into or out of the foreground and background. The gameplay pacing was drastically accelerated, emphasizing fluid juggles, lightning-fast chain grabs, and recovery frames. Namco refined the four-button control scheme—assigning independent inputs for Left Punch, Right Punch, Left Kick, and Right Kick—to make complex string combos more intuitive. Furthermore, the arcade release debuted two groundbreaking minigames: Tekken Force, a side-scrolling beat-'em-up, and Tekken Ball, a comedic volleyball variant that utilized impact physics.
