Description

To obtain access to the reactor, the player must collect the blue, yellow, and red access keys for each location. As an optional objective, the player can also choose to rescue PTMC workers that were taken hostage by the infected robots.

Descent

Released in 1995 by Parallax Software and Interplay, Descent redefined the shooter genre by introducing true three-dimensional environments with six degrees of freedom (6DOF). While famous on PC, its cutting-edge tech led to rare, immersive arcade cabinet adaptations featuring flight-stick controls. The storyline casts you as a Material Defender, a mercenary hired by the Post-Terran Mining Corporation (PTMC). Your mission is to pilot the Pyro-GX gunship into deep-space mines, eradicate a virus infecting the mining drones, rescue trapped hostages, and destroy the reactor core before the facility self-destructs.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Descent abandons traditional gravity. Players can fly, pitch, roll, yaw, and slide vertically or laterally through labyrinthine, fully 3D subterranean tunnels. Navigating these claustrophobic mines requires hunting for blue, yellow, and red keycards to unlock secure sectors. Your Pyro-GX ship starts with basic lasers but can be upgraded with quad-lasers, rapid-fire vulcan cannons, and energy-draining fusion rifles. You also wield secondary weapons like homing missiles and proximity bombs. Every level is a tense search-and-destroy mission against aggressive, virus-crazed drone AI, culminating in a frantic escape sequence: once you blow up the reactor, you have mere seconds to find the exit hatch before the mine implodes.
