Description

Puzzle Arena Toshinden takes the furious fighters right out of the ring and into the world of puzzle games! The game plays out much like the Puyo Puyo series by Sega. Connect 3 balloons of the same color to make them disappear. Get combos to have black pieces fall on the opponent’s side that are harder to get rid of.

Puzzle Arena Toshinden

Released in Japanese arcades in 1997 by Takara, Puzzle Arena Toshinden is a whimsical, block-matching spin-off of the pioneering 3D weapon-based fighting franchise. Stepping away from the gritty weapon combat of the main series, this puzzle title reimagines iconic fighters like Eiji Shinjo, Kayin Amoh, and Sofia as adorable, chibi-style contenders. The lighthearted storyline centers around the cast entering a mysterious, magical puzzle tournament organized by the Secret Society, trading their deadly steel swords, daggers, and whips for fast-paced, brain-teasing tactical matches to prove who reigns supreme on the puzzle board.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay is a competitive "falling block" puzzle game closely resembling the mechanics of Taisen Puzzle-Dama. Players manipulate falling pairs of colored spheres on a vertical grid. Matching three or more identical colors vertically, horizontally, or diagonally clears them from the board. Initiating chain reactions is vital, as executing combos triggers character-specific special moves that send massive amounts of "junk" blocks to clutter the opponent's screen. For instance, Eiji’s combos manifest his signature "Rekkasan" fire attack to scramble the enemy's board, while Sofia uses her whip energy to trap opponent blocks. Winning requires players to master character-specific block drop patterns, strategically building chains to clog the opponent's playfield to the very top for a knockout.
