Description

Get ready for the ultimate brawl-for-all! Namco Limited introduces the 3D arcade smash hit Tekken for the PlayStation game console.

Tekken brings together eight of the world’s deadliest fighters for a winner takes all tournament. Unlike Street Fighter, Tekken exists in a 3D environment with 360 degree visuals. You’ll fight each round against a different enemy skilled in various forms of martial arts. You must match their skills and expose the weakness of each opponent to defeath them and become the tournament champion.

Rock to a techno soundtrack as you perform mind-melting special moves and bone-snapping throws throughout the world, including Italy, King Edward Island, Greece, and Fiji. String together special combo moves, and with no rules there is no shame in kicking your opponent when he’s down.

Tekken

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1994, Tekken revolutionized the fighting game landscape as one of the earliest and most successful 3D arcade fighters, running on the powerful Namco System 11 hardware. Conceived by director Katsuhiro Harada and designer Seiichi Ishii—who previously worked on Sega's Virtua Fighter—Tekken injected a gritty, cinematic edge into the genre. The storyline centers around the King of Iron Fist Tournament, hosted by the corrupt conglomerate Zaibatsu, overseen by the ruthless Heihachi Mishima. Players guide tragic anti-hero Kazuya Mishima, who seeks revenge against his father Heihachi for throwing him off a cliff as a child. This generational feud laid the foundation for one of gaming's longest-running narratives.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike 2D contemporaries, Tekken introduced a revolutionary four-button control scheme where each button corresponds directly to a specific limb: Left Punch (LP), Right Punch (RP), Left Kick (LK), and Right Kick (RK). This intuitive mapping allowed for unprecedented fluidity in executing complex martial arts disciplines, ranging from Kazuya's Mishima-style karate to Paul Phoenix's hard-hitting judo and King's devastating professional wrestling throws. The game utilized innovative side-stepping mechanics, enabling fighters to maneuver into the foreground and background of the 3D rendered arenas. Defeating the sub-bosses and the ultimate boss, Heihachi Mishima, rewarded players with breathtaking, pre-rendered CGI character endings that set a new industry standard for arcade reward systems.
