Description

Blade is a video game based on the 1998 film adaptation of the Blade character that starred Wesley Snipes. The game was developed by Hammerhead and published by Activision for the Game Boy Color and PlayStation in 2000. It follows the adventure of Blade with help of his mentor and friend Abraham Whistler, and with old remembered enemies like Dragonetti and Mannheim.

The player takes control of the title character as he makes his way through various vampire-infested locations in order to defeat the vampire menace. Blade ventures through warehouses, sewers, museums, city streets, and nightclubs dispatching numerous types of enemies ranging from familiars (humans that do a vampire’s bidding), vampires, zombies, monsters, killer dogs, and other creatures of the night. To help Blade with his quest, he has a small arsenal of weapons to arm himself with courtesy of Whistler. Blade always has his trademark sword, but can also use his fists as well as a variety of firearms including pistols, shotguns, and machine pistols. Each firearms has three different types of ammunition: standard, explosive, and silver, each with its own effect on different enemies. Blade is also equipped with a “multi-launcher” that can shoot all sorts of things to kill vampires, like silver glaives and UV grenades.

Blade

Overview & History

Released in 2000 by Activision for portable consoles and retro arcade emulators, Blade brings Marvel's iconic half-vampire daywalker to life in a gritty, side-scrolling hack-and-slash adventure. Developed by Crawfish Interactive to capitalize on the late-90s cinematic vampire craze, the game follows Eric Brooks as he infiltrates gothic underworlds, subterranean sewers, and neon-lit vampire nightclubs. His ultimate mission is to dismantle a global blood-drinking conspiracy orchestrated by his arch-nemesis, the villainous Deacon Frost. Armed with a deadly signature titanium sword, silver-plated firearms, and specialized ultraviolet weaponry, Blade must slice and shoot his way through legions of mutated beasts and bloodsuckers across highly atmospheric, pixelated urban landscapes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay centers on intense 2D combat where players must constantly balance close-quarters melee attacks with limited ranged ammunition. Blade's primary offensive option is his sword, which allows players to execute quick three-hit combos, low crouch slashes, and upward sweeps to launch oncoming enemies into the air. For long-distance engagements, players can deploy silver-bullet pistols or throw bouncing glaives to stun targets. Tactical movement is crucial, as vampire squads frequently ambush from both sides of the screen. Throughout the multi-tiered levels, players must search for destructible crates containing health-restoring garlic serums and special ammunition refills. Defeating boss characters requires precise dodging, utilizing high-damage jump-attacks, and exploiting their elemental weaknesses.
