Released exclusively in Japan by FromSoftware in 1999 for the PlayStation, Echo Night 2: Nemuri no Shihaisha (commonly translated as The Lord of Nightmares) is a cult-classic first-person psychological horror adventure. The narrative follows Richard Osmond as he investigates the sudden, mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend, Christina. His search leads him to a sprawling, gothic mansion owned by the Alcott family, where a sinister blue stone and a cursed Holy Grail have trapped the souls of the deceased in a tragic temporal limbo.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike typical survival horror games of its era, Echo Night 2 eschews traditional combat entirely. Players explore atmospheric, dimly lit environments from a first-person perspective, interacting with the tragic ghosts bound to the estate. To progress, Richard must resolve the unfulfilled regrets of these lingering spirits, putting them to rest to obtain key items and lore. However, aggressive, malevolent spirits also haunt the halls. Lacking weapons, the player's only defense is to locate light switches and illuminate rooms, which instantly banishes hostile entities. The game tracks Richard's fear via a heart-rate monitor; if he is caught in the dark by a specter for too long, his heart rate spikes, resulting in a fatal panic attack. Multiple endings are determined by how many souls you successfully liberate.
