X2: No Relief is the sequel to Project-X for up to two players. Like its predecessor, it’s a horizontal (and sometimes vertical) scrolling shoot em up. The manual instructs the player that this game doesn’t need a story, and they should simply get rid of the attacking aliens.

To do so, the player has a choice between three types of space ship, each of them differs in terms of firepower and speed. The game has two different difficulty modes and a password system to resume the fight for the first five levels. During gameplay, the player has the possibility to pick up a wide variety of power-ups for their ship. Next to the main gun, side weapons and anti-gravity orbs with their own firepower can be obtained as well as mega-bombs, among other things.

The game is over once all lives or continues are used up. The player is then taken to a high-score screen to enter their initials.

Developed during the golden era of pre-rendered 3D CGI graphics, the game captured the intense, quarter-eating spirit of 1990s arcade cabinets. The narrative plunges players into a desperate interstellar war, where humanity's last hope rests on elite pilots deployed to halt a relentless, biomechanical alien armada threatening Earth's outer colonies.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game challenges players with horizontal side-scrolling action across diverse, hazard-filled alien environments. Before launching, players select from four distinct starfighters—such as the agile Sabre or the heavily armored Crusader—each boasting unique speed ratings, shield capacities, and weapon configurations. X2 utilizes a dynamic weapon-upgrade system where defeating specific enemy formations yields power-up crystals. These crystals allow you to level up your primary plasma cannons, equip homing auxiliary missiles, and deploy defensive satellites. Unlike standard shooters of the era, survival in X2 requires mastering dual-firing modes (toggling between forward-focused fire and rear defense) to combat threats flanking you from behind. With its tight corridors, screen-filling bosses, and a strict checkpoint system, the gameplay demands absolute memorization and razor-sharp reflexes.
