Description

Ballerburg: Castle Chaos is a real-time artillery strategy game influenced by an earlier game with the same name. The goal is to destroy the opponent’s castle (or something else, as described in the mission briefing). To accomplish your mission, you have no armies to command – your only weapons are ballistic: cannons, catapults and the like. It is also possible to use a bomber airship and some magic effects.

Everything takes place in a 3D environment. You can build your own castle and its surroundings, such as peasant huts and smithies, where weapons can be placed. These things cost gold, and you get gold by collecting taxes from the peasants. To destroy the opponent’s castle, you use your guns and catapults. It is impossible to see in advance where the shot will land, so you need to shoot the target more than once to be more precise. You can have multiple guns and switch between them to bombard your enemy with heavy stones, cannonballs, etc. You can upgrade these weapons to become even more deadly. However, these weapons cannot be fired all the time – they need time to reload, and every shot needs to be paid for.

Meanwhile, the opponent shoots at your settlement, trying to cut you short of peasants, so you cannot buy anything. To hinder him, you can use wizards, which are able to summon sandstorms and rain, obstructing the opponent’s sight and targeting. This game supports games with two human players using the Hot Seat mode, but there is no co-op campaign.

Ballerburg: Castle Chaos

Originally conceived as a beloved Atari ST public domain hit by Eckhard Kruse in 1987, Ballerburg: Castle Chaos received a whimsical, fully-rendered 3D remake by Ascaron Entertainment in 2001 for the PlayStation and PC. Set in a satirical medieval universe, the storyline follows a ridiculous war of egos between several rival monarchs—such as the narcissistic Queen Mona, the paranoid King Karlo, and the tyrannical Baron von Baller. Players step into the iron boots of a royal commander, tasked with defending their kingdom's honor through highly destructive, turn-based siege warfare. The game's campaign mode takes players across diverse, stylized environments ranging from volcanic islands to frozen alpine tundras, offering hours of engaging single-player challenges and multiplayer rivalries.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay brilliantly blends classic 2D artillery physics with real-time castle-management simulation. To win, players must completely demolish the enemy sovereign's heavily fortified throne room while safeguarding their own. Each turn requires a careful balance of micro-management and combat precision. You must manually adjust your artillery's vertical angle and gunpowder payload to account for shifting wind velocities and changing weather conditions. Simultaneously, you must manage your castle's economy: levying taxes on local peasants, repairing crumbled stone ramparts, and purchasing advanced ordnance. Players can deploy unique strategic moves, such as sending Spies to steal enemy gold, or hiring Wizards to cast devastating meteoric spells. A vast array of ammunition—ranging from standard iron balls and toxic gas shells to explosive sheep—adds a chaotic mix of strategy and slapstick humor to every siege. Upgrading your towers and recruiting specialized soldiers like alchemists further enhances your defensive capabilities.
