Description

The premise in Cyberbots is similar to Armored Warriors, albeit it features only a maximum of two playable characters on screen as opposed to three. Cyberbots is a very innovative game, attributed to its amount of selectable options, parts, and mecha that permit the player to format their play style to their preference. Similar to the Armored Core series, different legs (which affect movement abilities), arms (which affect reach and melee capabilities) and weapons can be mixed and matched between the selectable robots available to the player. Gameplay in Cyberbots is similar to other Capcom-created fighting games, with a medium-sized command list of executing various attacks available to each individual robot. Battles are a duel-formatted affair with players and the computer fighting against one another to proceed to the next battle.

Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness

Overview & History: Released by Capcom in 1995 on the CP System II arcade board, Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness is a sci-fi fighting game spin-off of the beat-'em-up Armored Warriors. Set in a dystopian late 21st century, the story centers on Earth's colonies facing a militaristic coup and a doomsday weapon. Players select a pilot—such as the hot-blooded Jin Saotome—and pair them with a giant mechanical suit called a Variant Armor (VA). This creates a highly unique fighting experience where pilot storylines and mech capabilities exist independently, paving the way for intricate tactical combat and branching narratives.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional 2D fighters, Cyberbots focuses heavily on customized mech warfare. Players select from three distinct chassis types—light, medium, or heavy—which determine their mech's weapon arm, legs, and overall mobility. Key fighting mechs like the balanced Blodia, the arachnid-like Tarantula, or the heavily armored Guldin offer vastly different combat strategies. The game features a unique four-button layout: two physical attacks, a dedicated projectile weapon, and a boost button used for hovering and omnidirectional air-dashing. A defining mechanic is limb destruction, where players can target and blow off opponents' arm parts to disable specific attacks. Accumulating energy in the Power Gauge unleashes devastating Cyber EX super attacks, creating explosive, fast-paced, and highly destructive matchups.
