Description

Puzzle Bobble 4 (also known as Bust-a-Move 4 in North America and Europe) is the third sequel to the video game Puzzle Bobble and is the final appearance of the series on the Arcade, PlayStation and Dreamcast. The game is also the final title to be recognizably similar in presentation to the original.

Building upon the success of Puzzle Bobble 3, the game adds a pulley system that requires two sets of bubbles, attached to either side of a rope hanging across two pulleys. The game contains a story mode for single player play.

Bust-A-Move 4

Overview & History

Released by Taito to arcades in 1998, Bust-A-Move 4 (known as Puzzle Bobble 4 in Japan) represents the pinnacle of the classic bubble-shooting puzzle formula. Building upon the legacy of its predecessors, this installment injected fresh life into the franchise by introducing innovative mechanics that shifted the competitive meta. The lightweight storyline once again follows the endearing dragon brothers, Bub and Bob, as they embark on a whimsical quest to pop colorful bubbles and rescue their friends from a whimsical array of quirky bosses. Diverging from standard arcade sequels, Bust-A-Move 4 refined the puzzle genre by incorporating physics-based chain reactions and a distinct storyline puzzle mode featuring branched pathways, hidden stages, and memorable character interactions that kept players glued to the cabinet.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, the gameplay retains the classic objective: launch color-coded bubbles from the bottom-center launcher to match three or more of the same hue, causing them to burst and drop dangling bubbles below. However, Bust-A-Move 4 revolutionizes the board dynamics with the introduction of pulley systems and weighing platforms. Bubbles now rest on hanging platforms that tilt based on weight distribution; if too many bubbles accumulate on one side, the scale tips, altering the entire playfield geometry and forcing players to meticulously calculate their shots. Furthermore, the game introduces 'star bubbles' which, when popped, instantly eradicate all bubbles of a corresponding color currently on the board. The competitive versus mode also shines, allowing players to pull off devastating combos that rain garbage bubbles down upon their opponents, complete with unique character-specific animations and special offensive moves triggered by rapid clear sequences.
