Description

SimCity 2000 is the successor to the city simulation game Sim City. You are once again the mayor, but this time you can fully customize the terrain before building your city. The graphics are isometric, whereas the original had graphics displayed in a top-down fashion.

This title adds numerous features over the original such as the ability of building “light” zones, subways, hospitals, colleges, zoos, and arcos which are actually cities in cities. You can now give names to places, and your city is surrounded by neighboring towns with which you can make trade. Finally, instead of the poll in the first game you now have the option of reading several newspapers to get an idea of your progress.

SimCity 2000

Overview & History

Released initially by Maxis in 1993 before finding its way onto various retro platforms and arcade hardware via custom cabinets, SimCity 2000 transformed the nascent city-building genre from a top-down, minimalist experiment into an isometric urban planning masterpiece. Unlike its predecessor, this iteration introduced a brilliant pseudo-3D perspective, elevation changes, and a robust subterranean layer for water pipes and subways. While arcade adaptations of strategy titles were rare due to time constraints, specialized coin-op versions challenged players to meet specific economic, demographic, or disaster-survival quotas within a ticking real-time clock. There is no traditional "storyline" or character roster; instead, the mayor is the invisible architect tasked with steering an anonymous patch of wilderness into a sprawling metropolis, surviving catastrophic monster attacks, alien invasions, and severe economic depressions along the way.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around zoning land into residential, commercial, and industrial districts while constructing vital infrastructure like roads, power plants, water pumps, and police stations. Players must meticulously balance municipal budgets, set tax rates, and manage municipal bonds to avoid bankruptcy. The introduction of altitude meant cities could now feature hills, valleys, and coastal water bodies bridged by causeways and highways. Special reward buildings—such as mayors' houses, city halls, and military bases—unlock as population thresholds are met. Disasters can be triggered manually or randomly, forcing mayors to dispatch police and fire departments to contain fires, riots, or tornadoes. The arcade variant uniquely tightened the feedback loop, demanding rapid problem-solving under extreme time pressure rather than the leisurely pacing of the home computer editions.
